Friday Finds

Makeover Your Home with these Simple Steps

We all love to decorate our homes especially when our tastes change or simply just get bored with the way the decor looks.

In today's "Friday Finds", we're going to give you a few tips that we've found to hopefully help you re-decorate without breaking your wallet.

1.  Paint your existing photo frames:

I'm sure we all have frames on our walls that could use a makeover.  It's fast and easy to do and the results will make you happy.

2.  Change up your throw pillows:

Wanting a new furniture or maybe just a new chair for that corner but really can't afford it...what should you do?  Buy some throw pillows to liven up that old sofa.  Purchase throw pillows that are completely different from your current ones will instantly give your room a new look!

3.  Rearrange your furniture:

This is possibly the best way to redecorate without spending any money.  You can simply rearrange one room or go into other rooms and take items that would go somewhere else in the house.   Taking pieces from other rooms and mixing them up will give your home a new feel.

4.  Plants...adding plants:

There are few things that can bring life into a room like green leafy plants or fresh flowers in beautiful and unique vases.  Try adding them to an area that needs a little brightening up.

5.  Adding Mirrors:

Fact: Mirrors always makes a room look larger. Hang one opposite a window to give the room an illusion of more light and an airy feel.  It's a great mini makeover for any room, give it a try.

6.  Framed Artwork:

If you have old magazine, calendars, greeting cards (we all seem to save them) or even that sweet stuffed animal your wee one would never let go of...frame it!  Get creative look around your home, you'd be surprised by what you already have and never thought of to hang on your walls.

Here is a little video we found from a designer, Blanche Garcia, that gives some easy to do decorating tips.

We hope you found this weeks "Friday Finds" helpful and fun.

Friday Finds...

Creative Bookshelves

We love reading and I know as weird as this may sound, the way old books smell.  So that brings us to this weeks "Friday Finds".

Traditional bookshelves are perfectly fine, but why when you can find more creative ways to display your favorite reading material.

If you're really good with building and carpentry, we found some really cool DIY ideas.

Let's get to reading and make it interesting to find that special book!

Friday Finds

Today's finds are all about "creative" lighting.

These felt lamps are designed by Vanja Bazdulj.  They are made out of wool felt which is molded and painted.  Vanja is interested in playful and experimental use of materials.

"The light in a house is as if our idea is born.  It is the challenge of the senses and a game of passion.  It is the most important thing to make a house vivid", by Fragiskos Bitros of FMFOS.  The chandelier on the left, "Roots" was inspired by a yoga excercise...the notion of taking root in the ground, spreading out and grounding one's self.  The other one, "Metal Flowers", there are 45 bulbs...and who doesn't like flowers.

These lights almost look like bird wings or bat wings.  They are made out of crushed mulberry bark fibers which have been turned into a pulp.  Mulberry is an invasive plant in Asia.  B. Alter, la torre cruz is the designer from the Philippines.

Aren't these two simply gorgeous!  Meet Anthony, founder and owner of "Primo Glass", specializing in handcrafted glass creations and custom lighting fixtures.  They blow and fuse the glass at the studio in their retail location located in Pier Village in Long Branch, NJ.  If you're a local or live close by, be sure to check out their retail store.

Last but far from least, "The Tornado" by Daniel Hopper Design.  Daniel's goal is to use metal to help bring a space to life, for viewers to be inspired to describe his work with adjectives not nouns, like strong, quiet, dramatic.  He likes to use patterns and design concepts found in nature, to allow his pieces to become their own being, rather than force them to represent or imitate nature.  I think, Daniel, definitely accomplished his goal with this piece.  Be sure to go to his website to see more of his fabulous work.

I hope you like this weeks "Friday Finds" by Dark Decors.

These curtains are sheer mesh topped with a romantic velvet damask motif.

Here at Dark Decors, we love stripes so we couldn't resist sharing our finds of these fabulous stripped wing back chairs.  These chairs are straight from the lobby of the Helmsley Carlton Hotel on Madison Ave.  Don't they have that "Alice in Wonderland" feel to them?

The perfect bedside table.  We love it when we find pieces of furniture that are unique and stylish.  This table was designed by Vincent Leman.  Be sure to check out more of his incredible pieces.

This fabulous boudoir black acorn mirror is decorated in leaves, ornate carvings and a beautiful finish.  This gorgeous mirror will look great in any room.

Orchids and Iris's

According to Pantone, "Radiant Orchid" has been declared the color of choice for 2014. The color authority describes the hue as "a captivating harmony of fuchsia, purple and pink undertones" and one that "emanates great joy, love and health."

Here's a selection of examples we've chosen to demonstrate how you can incorporate this fabulous color into your dark decor.

We love the tone on tone look of this wall embellishment.

Don't be afraid to mix your orchids with your iris's.

This Fall's color selection makes the perfect romantic
touch for your bedroom...

...and livens up the bathroom.

Not ready to paint an entire wall orchid?  Try using it as an accent.
